Richard Dawkins‘ The God delusion is a fascinating read. For those who haven’t read it yet: The 2007 Black Swan paperback edition contains a footnote with particular reference to Germany. You won’t find this footnote in the 3rd German edition of Der Gotteswahn, which came out this year.

The footnote, at the end of chapter 1, states that in January 2007, a German Muslim woman had applied for a fast-track divorce because her husband repeatedly and seriously beat her. Judge Christa Datz-Winter turned down the application, citing the Qur’an. The Koran, she wrote, sanctions such physical abuse. – Dawkins takes this as a particularly striking example of what he calls „unparalleled presumption of respect for religion“.

Moreover, there is a Preface to the paperback edition. In one great magisterial sweep, Dawkins replies to his many critics. If you don’t have time to read the whole book, read just this preface to the paperback edition! It contains in a nutshell everything you always wanted to tell the author because you thought you knew better. Well … almost everything. I will get back to the book once I have read it thoroughly.
